Win Xp sp3 Warning

P

pjscott

I downloaded and installed Windows XP Service Pack 3 Network Installation
Package for IT Professionals and Developers on one of my computers. Now I
can't get the computer to boot. I've tried booting in safe mode and last
known good. I guess I'll try to do a repair when I get home today and see
what happens.

This was an extra computer so it's no big deal. The computer is a Dell
2.8gig with 2 gig of ram. It was running Win Xp Pro sp2.

I don't think Microsoft should have made this a critical update.

Thanks,

Paul

I'm sure you can just uninstall it !

Note the name:-
"Windows XP Service Pack 3 Network Installation Package for IT Professionals
and Developers,"
....focus is on the "IT Professionals and Developers,"

....you did of course make the necessary preparations ?
....you did read through the, at the MS site, "what you should know before
installing ****
...and of course you did image your hd before making such changes ? (even on
a "2nd PC" ...that you are not too concerned about destroying) ?

....perhaps in the subject line for your OP, you should have used something
like:-

"XP SP3 warning for haphazard people ! :)

regards, Richard

The package you downloaded is useful for slipstreaming but why didn't you
just upgrade from WU like the DD page you used advised you to do?

Are you and Richard suggesting that the SP3 on the IT download page is
different from the SP3 on Windows update page?

I fail to see why so many people are in a rush to update SP3 when the vast
majority of it is already on a fully updated PC. I prefer to let the "dust
settle" before installing a major SP just to see if there might be problems
with it.

Well, for some of us there are particular issues that were addressed by
hotfixes that are included with SP3. I did not want to install the hotfix
until it was fully tested and officially released. I doubt it really made a
difference (waiting for SP3) as my particular issue was not resolved even
though the hotfix was included in the SP3. (KB815304) But I agree, there are
too many people just dying to complain because SP3 hosed their system. For
the record, I installed SP3 on 2 of my systems and aside from the fact that
my issue was not resolved, everything is working.

My philosophy exactly.
