Win XP reboots during printer install

Elmo

I am installing an HP Photosmart 1115 printer on computer
with Win XP and when I plug in the USB cable, the found
hardware notification area begins to report finding
several parts to install (printer & card readers) and
when it gets to the card readers, it reboots and then
finds hardware again and then reboots until finally
giving me a black screen for Safe Mode , Last Known Good
Configuration or Normal Restart. Only Safe mode allows
Windows to start. If I unplug the USB cable, normal
startup occurs.

I have successfully installed this printer on a computer
with Win 98Se and another computer with Win XP

Any ideas on what is causing the problem?

Thanks
Elmo

I had a similar problem with a different USB device. When
plugged into a powered USB 2.0 hub, WinXP Pro would not
boot properly. Unplugged, all was fine. (the manufacturer
recommended plugging into a powered hub) I solved my
problem by reaching behind the PC to plug the USB device
directly into a system port.

I truly don't know for sure why this worked. Although the
hub was powered, I already had two other devices already
connected. I suspect the new device was drawing just a
teeny bit more power than the hub could reliably provide.
