Win XP Pro SP2 Impossible

Hi All,
I'm using an Intel Pentium III Processor, 651 MHZ, 368 MB or RAM, OS Win XP
Pro Version 2002. In the past two years I've attempted numerous times to
install Service Pack 2 without ever being successful in having it work
properly. By that I mean that shortly (within two minutes) after reboot
following installation, I get the dreaded "blue screen of death" so often
mentioned in this forum, rendering the system inoperable. Each time I
uninstall SP2 my system returns to normal and operable.
I've tried following MicroSoft's directions to the very letter. I've
ordered, received and installed the SP2 CD from MicroSoft. Nothing seems to
work.
Does anyone have any suggestions? It's been a year, I think, since I last
consulted with you but have recieved solutions each time I have.
Thanking you in advance, I am...

Without knowing specifically what is the particular BSOD, it would
be difficult to ascertain specific issues with the upgrade to SP2.
Although the requirements for XP-SP2 seems to have been met, it is
pretty anemic since SP2 does consume more overhead. If feasible, try
to increase the installed RAM to 512 MB or even 1 GB. In the event
that the CPU is overheating, check that the PIII CPU HSF is properly
installed, the fan rotating freely and the contact is good between
the heatsink and the CPU heatslug (especially for OEM versions of the
PIII installation), and the cooling fins are clear. Also, try stripping
down the running applications and re-install them piecemeal, in the
event that there might be an incompatibility between it and the updated
drivers and system files from the SP2 upgrade. Report back with a note
on progress.

When the system BSODs do you capture the message content ?
Obviously you have an interaction between SP2 and hardware or
software in play. Without details it's nearly impossible to speculate
or give you "Garden Variety" answers on what to do.
Based the age/specs of your hardware you may be at the rollover
point where a new PC or ( MB/CPU & Memory ) are in order.
Sometimes Time & Effort (Aggravation) becomes more expensive
than money. Just a few days I ago I upgraded a neighbor's PC to
an inexpensive, but current MB/CPU & Memory for under $125.

See if there are any bios updates that may address your problem.

There are several known issues with SP2 causing windows to blue screen after
the install. You need upgrades anyways.

May I suggest you take a look in the below newsgroup, though I see you are
using that rather slow/error prone discussion group via the web interface.
If you can use newsgroups, then you may find it a lot quicker searching the
below group for the last three months, since there has been a rush by those
trying to update from SP1 to SP2.
As there is as yet no SP3, after you have managed to get SP2 installed, you
will then have 60-70 other criticals to get completely updated - and that is
another problem in itself.

I wish you every success in your endeavour.

1. Uninstall SP2 via Add/Remove Programs and reboot.

2. Run a thorough check for hijackware, including posting your HijackThis
log to an appropriate forum.

Check for Hijackware

http://aumha.org/a/quickfix.htm
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm

When all else fails, HijackThis (http://aumha.net/downloads/hijackthis.zip)
is the preferred tool to use. It will help you to both identify and remove
any hijackware/spyware.

**Post your HijackThis log to http://forums.spywareinfo.com/,
http://castlecops.com/forum67.html, http://aumha.net/viewforum.php?f=30 or
other appropriate forum for expert analysis, not here.**

3. Do not install SP2 until an expert gives your HijackThis log a clean bill
of health.
