Win XP Pro License

R

Robert

I recently purchased a license for Win XP Pro off the
internet. It did not come with a setup cd, so I am using a
friends XP Pro Install CD to install on my home PC. When I
get to the part of the installation that askes for the
Product Key, I typed it in and it tells me it is an
invalid product key. How can I get one that will allow me
to setup XP Pro. I have the license, but can't get it to
take the Product Key.

Greetings --

Product Keys are bound to the specific type and language of
CD/license (OEM, Volume, retail, full, or Upgrade) with which they are
purchased. For example, a WinXP Home OEM Product Key won't work for
any retail version of WinXP Home, or for any version of WinXP Pro, and
vice versa. An upgrade's Product Key cannot be used with a full
version CD, and vice versa. An OEM Product Key will not work to
install a retail product. An Italian Product Key will not work with
an English CD.

Bottom line: Product Keys and CDs cannot be mixed & matched. You
have to have the specific type of installation CD for which that
license is designed.

2nd Bottom Line: You've very probably been defrauded; a
reputable, authorized license reseller would have informed you that
you'd need to have the appropriate installation CD on hand in order to
use the license being sold.
