Win XP Pro Install Repair

Brian

I partitioned my C: drive adding a second partition for
installing another OS. I initially installed another
copy of Win XP Pro. After testing some software on this
newly installed partition I decided that XP Pro was not
what I needed so I installed Win 2000. During
installation of Win 2000 it prompted me a warning that I
was installing an older version of windows on this
partition that has a newer installed Win version, which
it was referring to the XP OS installed on this second
partition. I proceeded, as I understood it to mean that
the installation would only wipe the second partition of
XP and not bother the first partition with XP installed.
I didn't realize the boot partition would be disturbed.
After installation was completed it rebooted and it
booted into the boot menu asking me what partition I
wanted to boot. I now noticed that the first menu
selection that was previously one of the copies of XP
installed, now showed Win 2000, the other menu selection
was the original XP Pro installed. I selected the Win
2000 and it booted fine. I then rebooted and tried to
boot into the XP Pro partition but got an error message,
saying it could not boot.
I then booted with the Win XP CD and selected "REPAIR A
WINDOWS XP INSTALLATION USING RECOVERY CONSOLE". It
proceeded and began the process to repair, continuing to
the point on the screen where the radio button
indicated " INSTALLING WINDOWS". It proceeded to the
green progress bar that displayed "INSTALLING DEVICES",
and continued until the progress indicator bar was two-
thirds done, then at this point the screen went blank for
5 seconds and reappeared with the following, "SOUNDMAX
INTEGRATED DIGITAL AUDIO HAS NOT PASSED WINDOWS LOGO
TESTING TO VERIFY ITS COMPATIBILITY WITH WINDOWS XP" -
"DO YOU WANT TO CONTINUE INSTALLING THE SOFTWARE FOR
THIS HARDWARE". At this point the system freezes and I'm
unable to select continue or even ctrl alt del the
system. The only alternative is to reset the system to
warm boot. When system reboots it proceeds to complete
the install/repair where it had started previous to it
locking up. It continues to the same point again and
locks up as previous stated. I might add that I do not
get this error/problem when doing a complete install of
XP Pro.
Is there anything that can be done? I have an Intel
Desktop Board, D845PESV -
http://www.intel.com/design/motherbd/sv/, with the
installation CD software for the SoundMax digital audio
but can't install it at this point, as Win XP is unable
to proceed past the point that it locks up. Is there a
work around patch or shall I submit to doing a complete
install vice the repair feature? I hope there is a work
around as I do not want to have to reinstall all my
applications on this partition.

You can go to the BIOS,advanced, advanced chip-set cont-
rol,disable the on-board sound.Mines AC97,select the
audio for you're board,back-out,then save changes and
exit BIOS.You can re-install it later,when/if you do
go to windows update, usually it has the right drivers
for intel, dont install software, let windows try first.
