Win XP Home USB device not identified -- NO handshake

I have a Nikon Coolscan IV-ED film scanner with Updated
Drivers. My old Win SE Computer picks it up and
identifies "New Device Found" at Start Up. My new system
(AMD on VIA KT400 + VT8235 motherboard) with the latest
VIA USB drivers doesn't notice it at all (WindowsXP Home
SP1). Nikon says it's a Windows XP Home Problem. The USB
ports work with Mouse, Card Readers, Printer, flat
scanner, etc. I can't find anything helpful on
Microsoft's web addressing this problem. There are some
vague notes to USB problems on Win XP Home -- no or lost
handshakes. I have WinXP Service Pack 1 (Actually my
father in law's computer). Will I have to deep-6 Windows
XP and put ME on it to get it to work? (I want to avoid
this...).

Did you install the software BEFORE connecting the scanner to the PC? Is
this a USB port on the motherboard or on a hub... and if hub, powered or
unpowered. If it's a scanner that gets its power from the USB ports,
(rather than has a separate power lead) then it's probably a PSU (power
supply unit) problem..... you need to get a PSU of higher wattage.

You said "The USB
ports work with Mouse, Card Readers, Printer, flat
scanner, etc." How many devices are on your usb ports? Go to device manager
, scroll down to your usb and right click on each hub, properties, then
power and see if your over the max of .5amp. Hook your scanner up and check
to see if it is listed and current draw. What firmware version is it. There
are 2 newer ones for your scanner, with the 2nd fixing the scanner not
recognized.

Thanks, but the Scanner needs to be hooked up before
using the Firmware Upgrade. (I'll hook it up to my old
system and try it -- I can ID the Scanner unders Win
98SE).
