Win XP clean install

G

Guest

I have an old hard drive that I have reformatted in order to perform a clean
install of Windows XP Home Edition. I am using a Windows 98 (2nd Edition)
floppy Startup Disk to boot the PC.
When I try to run Setup from the Win XP CDROM, I get a message saying "Setup
can not be run in DOS mode".
Can anyone advise me on how I can install Win XP in this situation?

Many thanks.

All Microsoft Windows XP installation CDs are bootable.
Open your BIOS and set the CD Drive as the first boot
device.

HOW TO: Install Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;316941&Product=winxp

The Windows XP CD is bootable and contains all the tools necessary
to partition and format your drive. Follow this procedure and allow
Windows XP to partition and format your drive:

NOTE: It would be best to physically disconnect all your peripheral hardware
devices, except the monitor, mouse and keyboard, before installing XP.

NOTE: If you have an internal Zip Drive installed, physically disconnect the
EIDE and power cable to it before proceeding, otherwise your main
hard drive may not be assigned the customary C: drive letter.
After installing Windows XP, you may then reconnect it.

1. Open your BIOS and set your "CD Drive as the first bootable device".

2. Insert your Windows XP CD in the CD Drive and reboot your computer.
3. You'll see a message to boot to the CD....follow the instructions.
4. The setup menu will appear and you should elect to delete all the existing
Windows partitions, then create a new partition, then format the primary
partition (preferably NTFS) and proceed to install Windows XP.

6. ==> Immediately after installing Windows XP, turn on XP's Firewall.

7. After Windows XP is installed, visit the Windows Update website
and download the available "Critical Updates".

8. After installing the critical updates, be sure and visit the support website
of the manufacturer of the computer to download and install any
available Windows XP compatible drivers, such as video adapter
and audio drivers.

get is a black screen with a message saying "PRESS A KEY TO REBOOT".

Please help.

Also tried setting CD drive as second & third boot devices, get a message
saying "DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER" whether the
Win XP CD is in the drive or not.

You can download the installation disks for windows xp. Search the microsoft
website, download the 4 to 5 disks for the windows version you own. Boot from
the disks, and later use the Windows CD.

direction do you?

If your computer BIOS is unable to boot from the CD I have earlier had
success with a couple of alternatives:

1) Download Smart Boot Manager (http://btmgr.webframe.org/). It is a boot
manager which you install to a floppy. Then boot from this floppy, insert
the XP CD and tell SBM to boot from the CD. I have successfully booted CDs
from ancient AT computers using this little baby.

2) If the above fails you can try to copy the install files to the hard
drive before installing. Create a FAT partition (this may or may not be the
partition you wish to install to). Then copy the entire \i386 folder from
the XP CD to the hard drive. Boot from any MS-DOS or Windows 9x floppy or CD
and cd into the i386 folder. Then run the DOS-based XP installer, which is
either winnt.exe or winnt32.exe. I'm not sure which one, it's been some
years since I last did this.

Disclaimer: I never tried this on Windows XP, but it has worked on both
Windows NT and Windows 2000.

Andre, could do with a little help, managed to copy the I386 file to C:\
partition. My DOS commands are a little rusty, can't seem to get into the
I386 directory to run the file(s) you suggested.
It seems like this is the only option I have because my laptop (which I'm
using now) doesn't have a floppy drive.

I do hope you mean the I386 _folder_? Complete with all files and subdirs?
C:\ partition. My DOS commands are a little rusty, can't seem to get

Oki, installing-XP-from-DOS-prompt crash course follows:

- To change the current drive to the C: drive (if you have not already done
so): Type "C:" and press enter (without the quotes, of course).

- To change the current directory to the i386 folder: Type "cd \i386".

- Now type "winnt" and see if it works. If you do not get the installer or
you get a message saying "This program requires Microsoft Windows" or
something along those lines, try "winnt32" instead.

Hi Turbo, I have done that many of times clean install. You change to boot
from the cdrom w/xpoem in cdrom. Yes, you'll get a black screen with press
any or a key to reboot from the cd. Press enter simple as that!
