win setup problems

Hi all, My problem is my win2000 pro. for a while now would not shut down and
off completely after going to start, suht down or restart it would always
stop at a black screen with a blinking cursor, then I would always have to
manually push the power button to shut off the computer. So I decided to use
the win 2000 pro CD to try re installing a copy in effort to repair the
possibly bad files which makes my computer hang at the end of shut down. But
at about three quarter of the way the installation program started asking for
files located on the win2000 pro disk, in the file i386. I finally had to
boot up win98 which is on another partition on the same computer and copy the
file to the c drive, then restart win2000 pro and upon reaching the same spot
I would browse to that folder to get the program to access the files. So got
throudh that ordeal then at the end, the last window ("windows 2000
Professional upgrade- performing final task" ) the program just stops at
"Registers Components" I think its the second of four tasks in that last
window. I've tried quite a few times in all the modes on my computer, safe,
last known good configuration etc. they all send me back to that setup
program which strats the whole process over again. PS it seems the CD and
Floopy drives don't work once the setup program is in progress. PS Now while
the startup is running I always see "Boot from ATAPI cd rom failure" and I
canot boot from neither CD or Floopy. Can anyone help please? Thanks.
