Win 98 SE to XP Home Edition upgrade question

Would it be better to upgrade my old computer hard drive from 98 SE to XP
Home Edition while it is in my old machine then ghost the upgraded old hard
drive to a new larger hard drive which will go into a much faster machine? I
am getting a new machine and don't want to lose all my data off my old
machine's hard drive due to a fresh install of XP. Or, would it be better to
ghost the old drive to the new drive first then upgrade the new drive to XP
after I put it in my new computer? Thank you for any advise on this subject.

Lets take a look at you questions / comments separately:

(1) Would it be better to upgrade my old computer hard drive from 98 SE to
XP
This depends on how old you computer is. Check
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/home/evaluation/sysreqs.mspx for minimum
requirements.

(2) then ghost the upgraded old hard drive to a new larger hard drive
You new computer is not coming with an operating system? Regardless,
the old hard drive and operating system will be configured with the old
hardware. This may prove difficult to configure in the new
computer.

(3) don't want to lose all my data off my old machine's hard drive due to a
fresh install of XP.
Always backup your data. Even when performing an upgrade.

(4) would it be better to ghost the old drive to the new drive first then
upgrade the new drive to XP after I put it in my new computer?
See answer 3.

My advice would be to purchase a computer with Windows XP, and slave you old
hard drive to retrieve your data. Or you could utilize File Transfer Wizard
to move data to the new hard drive.

Hope that helps!

FAST would probably be a better option:

Get onto the new machine first, then when it is settled do the upgrade
to XP. If you try the other way you will only land into a need to do
install over again to match the new hardware
