win 2k server upgrade to xp pro

I am running win 2k server and need to change to xp pro... No longer need the
server environment but have 7 years of information I can't loose. Someone
told me xp pro will not install over win 2k server so what do I do? I want to
get ready for vista premium...... Any help would be appreciated.

You should invest in a backup system. Whether it's just a couple of USB
drives that you copy the "information I can't loose" to or invest in a tape
drive.

If you can't loose it and your not backing it up, eventually you *will*
loose it.

Get a new hard drive. Install [hardware] the new drive as the primary
master, and the old drive as the secondary master.

Install [software] XP Pro to the new drive. When you have installed XP
Pro, SP2, and all the Microsoft updates to the new drive, image the drive.
Then install all the software you need on the new XP Pro system.

Copy the data from the old drive to the new drive. Most of the old data
should be in the old My Documents folder, but it won't all be. It may take
a while to figure out where all the old data is on the old drive, but once
you have the system up and working, you can afford to take your time.

When you think that you have copied all the data, remove the old drive from
the system and put it someplace safe.
