win 2000 safety on internet

If win 2000 pro is updated to latest service pack, and win xp is updated
properly and both are using spyware, virus programs etc. will xp be safer to
use on a machine because it is a newer program or will win2000 be just as
safe?

Neither will be safe if they are infected with spyware and virus programs.
