Will winMe work on AMD64

B

BobV

I tried to build a new system using a ESC mobo with AMD64 cpu and could
not get winMe to complete the instal.
The system would install winXP and Ubuntu(64bit) just fine.
I trashed the mobo, but would like to try again with a different make mobo.
Is there any incompatibility with winMe and 64bit cpu's???..........BobV

The best way to run WinME on a modern system is to use Win4Lin9x and run
it on top of Linux.

Thanks General but I don't think I want to go that route.
And ED, I have never found OS dope on mobo specs. And believe me I have
looked.
At this point, I am assuming that winMe is not compatable with 64bit
hardware. Thanks all...BobV

Bob,

If what you want to do is run things like MS Office then Win4Lin9x is a
much better way to do it then running WinMe natively. Win4Lin9x runs at
native speeds but it's much more stable then a native Win9x system because
it's running on top of Linux. It's integrated into the Linux environment,
for example you can cut and paste between Windows and Linux applications
and Windows can see any Linux directory that you want to let it see (you
configure Linux directories as Windows disks). The downside of Win4Lin9x
is that that it requires a kernel patch and the latest kernel that they
have support for is 2.6.14.x. Win4Lin has a newer product called
Win4LinPro which will run 2K and XP on top of Linux. W4LPro doesn't
require a kernel patch but it's performance is much worse than Win4Lin9x.
There have been other posters here who are happy with Pro but they either
have a much higher threshold of pain then I do or there is something about
their configurations thats different than mine.

ECS has no motherboard utilities for 9x O/Ses so I would suggest you either
contact them or get Windows XP. If you're going to get a new 64 bit
motherboard, do some research at the manufacturer's websites first.

It's what they're there for after all.

Bob,

Another option that works is running WinMe in Virtual PC. I have it
installed on my Abit AV8 (Athlonx64 3500+) system that runs WinXP Pro as the
host system. As long as you don't need anything really fancy for video or
performance (such as a 3D game) it works well.

The best thing to do is just lose WinME and pick up a copy of XP Home
instead! You should be able to find a full version of it somewhere for less
than $70 if you look around enough!

You need to find a mobo without PCI-Xpress video. The drivers aren't
available for Win98 & ME. Look for a mobo with a Socket 754 and an AGP
video slot. All of the Socket 939 mobos that I've seen have PCI-Xpress
video.

I recently built several Win98 AMD64 systems for use with Win98SE. Asus
K8N-E, K8N, and K8V mobos will work fine.

There is an AsRock mobo which supports both AGP and PCI-E, and Socket 939.

MSI K8N Neo2 based on nForce3 250GB Ultra chipset (socket 939) is with AGP
solely. No PCI-E on this mobo.
