Will windows messenger get updates?

I've had friends that downloaded MSN messenger 6, and it
sounds like a really exciting update to MSN messenger.
I'm tempted to install it myself too. But I really don't
want to have two similar messengers, both windows
messenger and MSN messenger, on my computer. So does
anyone know if there would be updates to windows
messenger that would include the new functions in MSN
messenger 6???

Greetings Colleen,

Windows Messenger and MSN Messenger are going down different paths and as such, although the
next version of Windows Messenger will support features like digital ink, UPnP file transfer,
and a few other features that are in MSN Messenger 5 and 6, it will not have support for
custom emoticons, a new GUI, etc.

After you've installed MSN Messenger 6:

you can disable Windows Messenger, so it doesn't come up. To do so, open up the main Windows
Messenger window, click the Tools menu, then Options, then Preferences tab and uncheck 'Run
this program when Windows starts'.

This won't remove Windows Messenger, but it will let it stay out of your way, and allow MSN
Messenger 6 to work properly. Also,
you'll probably want to turn off the Windows Messenger integration in Outlook and/or Outlook
Express (depending on what you have it installed). To do so, for Outlook (XP/2002), just
open Outlook, click the Tools menu, then Options, then the Other tab, and uncheck 'Enable
Instant Messaging in Microsoft Outlook'. For Outlook Express, close
Outlook Express, and run this .reg file:

Hi Jonathan:

The divergent paths are understandable.

However, right now my webcams don't work in MSN 6 beta (a known issue,
right?) and if I try to use remote assistance it tells me I don't have
Windows Messenger installed (duh!). Are these two issues going to be
resolved before we, the Windows customers, have to choose OUR path?

TIA

Hi KF,

(Haven't seen you for awhile, hi!)

Which webcam is it again? The 'Video Conference' (see the Actions menu) in MSN Messenger 6
should work with any camera that worked in MSN Messenger 5 / Windows Messenger 4.x.

Remote Assistance still needs Windows Messenger, there's really no way around this, the
Remote Assistance component was built with Windows Messenger in mind, and until that specific
component in Windows is changed, this "necessity" will still exist.

Hey back - no I haven't posted for a while - but I've been lurking :p

The webcams are both Logitechs (Pro 3000 and Messenger). My contact could
see me but not hear me. I couldn't hear nor see. Are the port settings
different with MSN Messenger?

As for remote assist, what's the trick? Just disable Windows Messenger from
running but leave it installed?

Hi KF,

Oh, I see =).

The QuickCam 3000's should work fine. For the 'Webcam' feature, it uses port 9000 or 80 TCP
(tries both), and if it can't establish a direct connection, it uses a central server, so
this feature should work, regardless.

The 'Video Conference' feature uses the same UPnP rules and ports as the previous versions
(ports 5004 through 65535 UDP) as does the Audio feature.

Right for the Remote Assistance.
