Will skipping SP2 allow future critical updates?

Jeff

I plan to delay installing SP2 for a long while. I am well protected with
other firewalls, Virus checkers, anti-spyware, modified safety options,
using Firefox, etc.

Will my not updating to SP2 hamper my installing other future critical
updates? In other words, will future critical updates assume I have SP2 in
order to work correctly?

Thanks.

There will not be any further critical updates for WinXP SP1. SP2 is
considered a critical update.

The OP wasn't asking if there would be any SP1 updates.
He asked (and you could have divined this had you read the
post before responding) if he will be able to continue to
receive the inevitable post-SP2 updates if he doesn't
install SP2.

OP's query was fairly obtuse. Your interpretation of it may be as valid as
mine.

As I understand it, the update site reads your current
system and recommends updates as they become available.
if the update requires SP2 and you don't have it, then you
should not see it as available for your system.
or you could see the listing, and it may say sp2 required.

SP2 is not just a matter of security, it has other updates
as well, although it concentrates pretty hard on security
matters

At least you can turn off the SP2 automatic update whilst still letting
through pre-SP2 patches

Think there'll be any?

I would think so. The time limit for the extension is 120 days, so MS
will have to patch "old" XP during that time. The corporate customers
who forced their hand on the Auto Update won't let them get away with
not doing so.

AFAIK, SP2 is considered a critical update for WinXP SP1 and it may well be
the last.
