width of columns in subform

I have a dataview subform (based on a query) and it's
displaying the columns much too wide. I can adjust them
manually in Form View but they revert. No matter what I
set the individual field widths to in Design View, the
columns stay wide, creating a scroll bar at he bottom of
my subform that wouldn't be necessary if I didn't have
wide colums for three digit numbers. What am I doing wrong?

have you tried? opening the subform object in the database
window - in form view - then adjusting the column widths,
and then saving the subform object while still in form
view, and then closing.
