Widescreen Monitor

I replaced my old 17" CRT monitor (4:3 ratio??) with a 19" widescreen and
everything is stretched out. How do adjust the aspect ratio in Vista? When I
change "optimal aspect ratio" setting through my monitor to off, the ratio
looks great but it does not use the entire screen and is obviously not in
widescreen.

Hello,

have you tried adjusting screen resolution to a widescreen resolution
(Right-click Desktop -> Personalize -> Display Settings)? For you it'll be
something like 1440*900.

Hope this helps.

Thanks! I tried 1440 by 900 but received a message through my monitor that it
was "out of range". I went down one to 1360 by 768 and that looks much
better. Am I missing much by not having the ability to go 1440 by 900?

For optimum viewing, you should set your LCD (?) monitor to it's "native
resolution". Check your monitor manual.

Hello,

you're welcome. Some note a big difference between these two resolutions,
but when I worked with a 19'', I used both resolutions, and working with the
smaller was as good as with the 1440 by 900.
It's not that much, and I believe you won't be missing a lot.

I just looked in my manual and it says "optimized for 1440 x 900 display
resolution". Why then does it tell me 1440 x 900 is out of range? Do I not
have a correct setting somewhere? I am using an ATI Radeon HD 2400 Pro
graphics card.

Usually LCD (is this an LCD monitor?) have a refresh rate of 60 Hz. Is this what
you have set it to? Again check your monitor manual for the optimal refresh
rate.

It is a LCD. The only refresh rate option I have at 1440 x 900 (and 1360 x
768) is 60 Hz. Strange, I wonder why I can get that resolution...

You could try to completely shut down the computer and the monitor,
disconnecting the power plugs, and giving it a few minutes before you plug them
in again and powering up. This might reset everything. It is strange. Good
luck. Also, have you investigated the monitor setup options? Consult your
manual.

Does you Video Card support Wide Screen monitors :) Many do not realize that older video cards do not recognize or are not compatible for Wide Screen monitors

It is a new graphics card; 256mb DDR2, Vista and DirectX 10 support, duel
monitor support, HD video playback, HDMI with 5.1 surround audio. Widescreen
is not the problem. 1360 x 768 looks great. It will not let me use 1440 x
900. I plan on emailing both my monitor and graphics card makers.

Please share you video card make and model numbers. Also, what is the
version of your video drivers?

Thanks The Traveller! You got me thinking (which is difficult for me to do!).
I updated the drivers through the "Catalyst Control Center" and am now at
1440 x 900. And it looks damn good!

Make sure you have the latest Vista driver for your video card.

Curious

What driver release from your graphics card/chip manufacturers website do
you have installed?
What interface are you using from your system to your display?
Drivers from MS are often out of date or incompatible with users' systems
