WIA service hangs at startup

P

Pete

Event Viewer reports the following:
Source "Service Control Manager"
"The Windows Image Aquisition Service (WIA)hung on startup"

With sp2 installed, windows "hangs" at startup. The
desktop appears and then it takes two to three minutes for
the icons and the taskbar to appear. There is very little
hard drive activity during this time and there is no busy
(hour glass) icon; just the normal pointer.

I checked WIA and it is started. I tried disabling it and
rebooting. Windows then starts normally but I need the
service for my scannner.

Thanks
Pete

Your scanner is connected at startup? The hang at startup is likely the
system polling for the scanner, not finding it. Remove and reinstall
the scanner software. The WIA scanner driver is likely corrupted.

However, take this opportunity to validate your system before installing
the scanner software. Disk cleanup. Complete virus scan. Complete
adware scan (SpyBot, Ad-Aware). Find your system installation CD and
from a command prompt, type: sfc[space]/scannow to fix problems with OS
driver files. Defrag. Then reinstall the scanner software, paying
particular attention to the vendor's instructions about when to connect
the scanner the first time.

Q, I disconnected the scanner, set the WIA service to
automatic, and rebooted. Same thing, WIA hangs at
startup. Does this eliminate the scanner as a possible
source of the problem? I will try reinstalling drivers
anyway.

Thanks
Pete

Google shows that yours is not an isolated problem with WIA. The fix
looks like stopping WIA service and unplugging the scanner. Reboot. Do
not start with the scanner plugged in. This *might* help
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;819017&Product=winxp
There is a list of HP 4400C/4470C, 5400/5469C scanners affected. Check
with your vendor for anything related to this problem, also. Please do
sfc /scannow; it will help with corrupted system files. If you do not
have a full XP installation CD, check for C:\Windows\i386. If that
folder is there, it contains the install files needed for sfc to
function.

Q, thanks for all the helpful info. Although it doesn't
actually solve the problem, it goes a long way knowing
that others have the same problem. Canon reports on their
website that their scanners and sp2 are completely
compatible (no surprise) but I did send them an email
anyway. I ran that sfc /scannow utility however it did
not display any results. Perhaps there is a log file. I
also downloaded Spy Sweeper. I will try the procedure
that you posted when I get back from work today but first
I have to reinstall sp2 (system restore may be the
smartest feature that MS has everever done considering all
the os headaches). Once again, I thank you. I will keep
you posted on my progress if you'd like.

Rock, I did so at some point by removing the scanner from
device manager and I then checked add-remove programs for
any canon scanner utilities. I will do so again to be
sure. If there is still a problem, it would seem that
either the drivers are in fact not removed or the problem
is with WIA.

Ok, good luck and post back with the outcome.

I was having the same issue with a HP G55 and networked HP PSC2510. I
deinstalled both printers and scanners along with all software and just
installed the G55 and I am working good now.
