Wi-Fi Adapter Conflict with Wired Network

I recently tried to add a Wi-Fi adapter to my Compaq
Presario laptop but couldn't. My laptop gave me a "TCP/IP
Mobile Protocal not installed" and it slowed down to a
grinding halt with CPU usage going through the roof. The
hard disk on the laptop apparently went into some loop and
wouldn't stop working with the hour glass icon on
indefinitely.

What could be wrong?

The situation was only solved when I rebooted and restored
my drive C partition using Symantec Ghost.

I have two network adapters: a "Local Area Network" one
(Realtek RTL8139 Family PCI Fast Ethernet NIC) and
a "1394" connection (1394 Net Adapter) on a Compaq
Presario laptop. They're bridged (MAC Bridge Miniport).
I really don't know what the 1394 is or what it's for,
don't know why I even have 2 and I don't think I need the
bridge. I used to when other computers accessed the net
through mine, but ever since I bought a network hub and
connected it to an ADSL modem/router we all access through
the router.

Problem is I cannot touch these adapters and any attempt
to remove one or change the configuration in any way
results in the laptop giving the same "TCP/IP Mbbile
Protocal not installed" message and grinding down to a
halt.

Internet access is ok, network connectivity with other
computers is ok, only problem is I cannot touch my network
connections without all hell breaking loose.

Appreciate any help I can get.

Does the WiFI card come with a driver designed for Windows XP?

Yes it does. I also tried 2 different WiFi cards incl. a
USB one and reaction to all was same...
