Why the "MS Realtek AC'97 Audio" update????

This "update" downloaded automatically and can't/wont install for some
reason. I
tried several times. How do I ether install the damn thing or get rid of
it? It's 8.7MB.
It doesn't look like any security update to me. Is MS now auto-downloading
drivers we may not want or need?

Thanks
FS~

You need to configure your automatic downloading from MS. You should
have it configured "only" to download critical updates. You probably
have it set to download everything. Do not install the Realtek
update, delete it. If you need to update your sound driver, go to the
manufacturer's web site and obtain a new driver.

How do I delete it when I can't find it? Neither FIND or Agent-Ransack can
find it. Where would it have downloaded to???

I turned off the auto-update altogether.

CS,

I have the same problem. I got the error message during initial install
that the installation failed. I done a restore from this morning and tried
again (2nd time) and it reported that it was successful. However, the
update icon returned to the Tray and wants to try to install it again. If I
select OK it gives the unsuccessful error message.

You stated deleted the file. Can you tell me where the RealTek update file
is residing so I can remove it?
Thanks,
LIT

In my computer, AC'97 is associated with my modem. In my case AC'97 is from
Agere System not Realtek. In Control Panel, Phone and Modem Options, Modem
tab click on Properties. If Realtek AC'97 is your modem, try the Drivers
tab and rollback the driver.

Delete the contents of the C:\Windows\Software Distribution\Download folder.

Done! I didn't see it there by that name but deleted the folder. Hopefully
it's gone.

Thanks! :)

I have a Lucent Win Modem. I deleted that download folder as suggested in
the post above, but the darn thing may have installed anyway yesterday.
Unlike the FFF on W98SE the FIND feature on XP-Home is near useless. It's
slow as molasses and very inaccurate. Agent Ransack also misses things but
is better than FIND. BTW, I did not see AC'97 in the folder I deleted.

It should be located in C:\Windows\Software Distribution\Download

Open the folder in Explorer and delete the update. Note that the
folder is not easy to identify since it will consist of numbers and
letters. Identify the update by its date.

Can you use Device Manager to roll back the driver - if it causes
problems. When I updated my audio ( Motherboard AC'97) from the ASUS
site the program states that the newer driver will be identified by
WinXP as Realtek. Added some features to the sound.
Bill - Atlanta
system and caused no problems...
