why switchboard?

I don't mean this question to sound snide but; why was the switchboard ever
invented?

What advantage does it have vs an unbound form with buttons?

I am honestly perplexed at this and would welcome insight to the thought
process behind this feature.

While I always use an unbound form with buttons myself, one advantage I can
see is that the switchboard can be dynamic. Changing entries in a table is
easier than futzing around with positioning buttons and changing the VBA
code behind the form.

The disadvantage is that you cannot easily exceed the number of
entries allowed on the form.

It can be done manually with a change in the form, BUT you then CANNOT
use the switchboard editor.

(This is true thru Access 2003. I do NOT know if 2007 has changed this
restriction.)
