Why must I reboot system to send/receive Outlook 2002 email?

I have two Windows XP Pro machines on a peer-to-peer network. Both are
running Office XP. Both require a system reboot to send or receive Outlook
2002 POP3 email.

Internet connection is via Cable modem & wireless router.

I've reset the network, replaced the router, repaired the Office XP
installations, swapped out one machine with a loaner machine also running
WinXP Pro and Office XP. Loaner machine (with fresh install) also requires
reboot to send or receive email. Windows & Office patches are all up-to-date.

I've tried with & without firewall.

I haven't tried disabling MS Startup items (msconfig) yet. I will tomorrow.

I can go for several hours with no emails. When I reboot, the emails come
in promptly. It might receive emails for several minutes and then no more
emails until the system is rebooted.

Both machines are set forfile & print setting. Another identical system on
the network is not experiencing any problem. All macihines have two NICs,
one wired, one wireless. Wireless is for internet connection, wired is for
peer-to-peer network (access shared files, network printer).

Any suggestions would be appreciated. I'm prepared to backup, flatten and
reload one machine over the weekend to resolve the problem.

You may have a network problem; can you access the Internet otherwise?
Can you ping your mail server? But since you have two network
connections, this may or may not tell you anything.

Can you get any useful information from ipconfig /all ?

Soon as your PC starts up, try completely disabling the anti-virus
(temporarily), then seeing how you go for a while. Anti-viruse progs
often have a knack in doing things you don't expect them to e.g. basic
firewalls.

I've examined all aspects of the network. I am pulling an IP from the router.

Yes, I can verify that the IP is valid. I can ping outside URLs
(google.com, the mail server, etc).

I'm using CA ISS on these machines. I've uninstalled the anti-spam
completely. I've uninstalled the firewall completely. I've disabled the
antivirus temporarily. I've switched to a second AV (AVG) on the loaner
machine. No impact.

does mail send for a period of time after a reboot? if so, do you have a
desktop search utility installed that indexes outlook?

Diane, Thanks for your response.

Yes, it does send and receive for a period of time after a reboot.

I assume you're asking about an application similar to Google Desktop? If
so, then no there are no desktop search utilities.

Correct. Are you sure the MSN one didn't sneak in? This is it's MO. :)

There are no other desktop search utilities. A few utilities that MIGHT be
suspect are:
Citrix gotomypc
Macromedia Shockwave Player
Macromedia Flash Player 8
MS Windows Journal Viewer
MSN Music Assistant
Google Toolbar (Not Google Desktop Search)
any other addins? two others are confirmed to cause it but there may be
more - cause #4 about halfway down:

No other addins. I've checked for .COM addins and there are none.

I've got a loaner laptop onsite that is experiencing the same problems. I
have one of the problem machines here at the shop. I'm NOT experiencing the
problem here that they are. I'm using SBC DSL as my ISP. They are using
Comcast Cable as their ISP. That appears to be the ONLY difference that I
can identify. I've switched out routers (Netgear vs Linksys) with no
difference.

Are you aware of any know incompatibilities between Computer Associates
Internet Security Suite and Outlook 2002?

I have CA ISS installed on all of these machines. I've uninstalled the spam
filters and disabled the firewalls with no apparent effect. I've brought in
a loaner laptop that has AVG AV and the MS SP2 firewall. It is also
experiencing the same problem.
