There are two separate equation editors in Word 2007.

The old one can be invoked through Insert > Object > Microsoft Equation 3.0. To
make it available in the list of objects, you may have to rerun the Office setup
program, choose to add features, and select the equation editor from the "Office
Tools" group.

The new editor, invoked through Insert > Equation or Alt+=, doesn't need any
special setup or add-in. If it doesn't work, try going to Office button > Word
Options > Resources and clicking the Diagnose button.

Thanks for the response.

Following on from your suggestion, I have now worked out what is happening.

I choose to save my documents in word6 format, and it seems that this is
disabling the button.

This fact does become indirectly apparent if you 'hover' the mouse over the
button when some information that gives a clue about this is revealed.

However, originally I tried to 'click' the buton rather than 'hover' - so
didn't get this information.

Hope this helps others

[PS: When I received an email notifying me of your response, I clicked the
link to take me to it, my browser opned but nothing happened. No page loaded.
I had to find my way back to this page the hard way. Is this because I use
Mozilla rather than IE?]
