Why is ntoskrnl.exe trying to access the internet
My firewall tells me that this program is trying to access the Internet.
Can someone who knows tell me what exactly this program does and why it
needs to access the internet.

This question is on numerous forums without a satisfactory answer.
Please do not give your opinion on this. Everyone has an opinion.
I am looking for an official answer from someone representing Microsoft.

Thanks

If you're looking for "an official answer from someone representing
Microsoft," you are asking in the wrong place. This is a peer-to-peer
newsgroup. There are no Microsoft employees here, except very occasionally,
and always unofficially, on their own time.

And note that Microsoft MVP's, like me, are not Microsoft employees.

I guess that is part of the problem.
There are too many non-employees giving free advice on microsoft products,
with little or no input from Microsoft.
This is fine for easy stuff like copying cells in excel, but when it comes
to more difficult subjects there needs to be more supervision from Microsoft.
A good analogy is bringing your car an ordinary mechanic vs the official
dealer when it breaks down.

You have a misunderstanding about the purpose of newsgroups. If you want
official answers from Microsoft, call their support and pay for it. Based
on your "reasoning", you would not even be able to take your computer to a
professional computer repair shop because those people don't work for
Microsoft.

Usenet newsgroups and Internet forums are available for people to
communicate with each other. You certainly don't have to use them. Here is
information about Usenet newsgroups, where you are posting now.

Oh, and if you think taking your car to the dealer instead of to a
qualified, honest mechanic is better then I have a bridge to sell you.

Hope you manage to get help for your problems from somewhere. I know it
won't be from here - at least certainly not from me. *plonk*

Just because someone ( a mechanic ) is an employee of a official dealer;
means that he/she is an expert. I've seen some duds in my day! The
same reasoning goes for employees of Microsoft.

A lot of the help/advice that you will get on this NG is far beyond what
you will ever get from a "Microsoft" employee!!

If Microsoft did deign to answer your question, they might say:

"...ntoskrnl.exe is a critical process in the boot-up cycle of your computer
although should never appear in WinTasks whilst under normal circumstances
Note: ntoskrnl.exe can be altered by the w32.bolzano and variants. If this
process appears in WinTasks, please update your virus definitions
immediately."

Or they might say:

"Flying turtles are real, they just don't show up on radar."
