Why is message with attachments converted to mime type?

I'm supporting an Outlook 2003 user who gets certain messages with
attachments that show up in his inbox with no sender and no subject and the
attachment is mime-encoded. Looking at the all text message, the subject has
been specified and the sender is shown. The user gets various other messages
with attachments correctly and when I receive the message in question in
Outlook 2003. it is processed/formatted correctly.

Does anyone have any idea what may be going on? I'm about to suggest the
user remove and re-install Outlook 2003 and see if the problem goes away.
This is a recent phenomenon so he may have installed something that screwed
up Outlook (but in checking the restore points, I don't see anything
suspicious) or perhaps there is some automatic update (which is turned on)
that didn't install correctly.

Are you receiving the messages the same way as the user - i.e., directly or
is the user forwarding them to you? If you create a profile on a different
machine, are the attachments ok?

This problem usually means something is munged before the user receives it
and outlook can't properly decode it - forwarding it often forces outlook to
properly decode it as an attachment.

Thanks for replying. Forwarding has no impact -- I've forwarded the message
(correctly formatted) to the user and to myself. He gets it munged and I get
it properly formatted. This is reproducible with the message in question
and has occurred with other messages according to the user. What is really
suspicious is that the message appears in his inbox with no subject and no
sender shown. This suggests that Outlook on his machine is not properly
processing the incoming data stream.
