Why is mail merge removing @ & . from email addresses?

I am trying to use mail merge on Word to send emails to my excel databse. My
database shows the email address extensions (i.e. @ and .com) but when I
click to Mail Merge and it shows the addresses it is going to, it removes the
@ and . from the email address.

What am I doing wrong?
