Why is Kaspersky 5.0 so slowwwwwwwww?

A

Alex Makoque

I used to run version 4.0 (I'm pretty sure it was 4.0 anyway - this
was between Spring '02 and Fall '03) on a 400Mhz Celeron with 128Mb
RAM running ME, and before that on a K5 running at 166Mz with 64Mb of
RAM again running ME, and performance was always acceptable.

Now however on an AMD Athlon 2.4+ with 128Mb RAM running XP Pro SP2,
the machine feels retarded in comparisson. Is it purely a memory
issue, what with the demands of XP Pro and then Kaspersky pushing it
over the edge? I'm thinking of adding another 512Mb of RAM anyway, or
have I missed something in the setup somewhere and it's being totally
over cautious with everything it does?

Looking at the System Requirement page on the Kasperky website it says
for an ME machine, 32MB is required, yet for XP it says 128Mb (more
recommended). Hmmmm, thinking of dumping XP for ME now!!! Can I assume
that all of the various vedors latest releases will slow my machine
down like Kasperky 5.0 does? I've read on here though that Kaspersky
is particulary resource greedy...

I feel safe with Kaspersky though, when every 3 hrs their seems to be
an update. I ran PC-cillin 2002 for the last 12 months, and sometimes
it would seem like a week between updates! PC-cillin didn't seem to
slow my machine down at all, in fact you'd hardly nnotice it was
there. This maybe explains why, even though regularly updated, about
15 diffferent viruses managed to get into my system in the last 12
months! The built in firewall didn't seem to make any difference
either when tested with the Shields Up website....

ANd just as I'm about to click send, Zone Alarm has popped up telling
me:

ZoneAlarm Pro blocked a port scan attempting to communicate with port
12345. The intent of the scan was trying to determine if a Trojan
horse is located on your machine or if you are using the Trend Micro
anti-virus scanning software. Rest assured, ZoneAlarm Pro has
determined that there are no applications listening on 12345 of your
computer.

Top marks to Trend Micro it seems! And why is the help file in
Japanese????

First of all 128MB of RAM is to little to run Windows XP efficiently.
I would strongly suggest upgrading you memory to 512MB or more.

Is it purely a memory

No - Microsoft have admitted a conflict between XP SP2 and Kaspersky.
See:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=884130&product=windowsxpsp2
for the official version, and various news sources.

For Kaspersky's office version see:
<http://www.kaspersky.com/faq?qid=151827128>

Is Kaspersky Anti-Virus compatible with Window XP Service Pack 2?

Version 5.0 of Kaspersky Anti-Virus is fully compatible with Windows
XP Service Pack 2

Version 4.5 of Kaspersky Anti-Virus is compatible with one exception:
on systems based on AMD Athlon 64bit with DEP mode enabled "on access
scanner" can malfunction (KAV Monitor).

(functionality of the product does not change in different
localizations)
