Why is it impossible to get rid of registry entries?

Local Machine - Software - windows - current version - run:

D:\PROGRA~1\McAfee.com\Agent\mcupdate.exe
"E:\Program Files\TrojanHunter 4.2\THGuard.exe"
"D:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot

I've been trying for years to get rid of these bastards. Can anyone tell me
how to?

Thanks

Backround process rewriting them maybe?

Quite possibly.

More than once I've shut down zonealarm, ad-aware and pretty much anything
else, and run registry mechanic to kill them. Seems to have done the job,
all clear - but reboot and the buggers are back again. Any idea what
background process is sticking ALL of them, not just one, back again?

have you used add/remove programs and unistalled them?

This feature is in the back of the windows closet, and for many of us it
will takes yyyeeeaaarrrsss before deciding to get indere.....

Yes. I've been a pc technician and I have heard of such arcane things as
add/remove software :)) No dice. Cleaning out the registry - no dice.
Registry mechanic - no dice. Followed the most detailed instructions to
remove all unholy traces of mcafee from registry - no use at all.

Hi

What, if any, error message(s) do you see when trying to delete those
entries? What Permissions do you have on those particular entries?

glad to hear your spirits are up...:)

Here is something new that i discovered recently. Its a freeware called
Autoruns from sysinternals.com

It really breaks open all those processes in great detail. The best part is
that when you go from tab to tab and you find a familiar but unwanted entry,
you can uncheck the line item, then double click on the filename and it will
automatically open the registry and disable it..... I think you'll like it.

But it is very strange that even with your experience these things are still
running in the background.... maybe there in a hidden partition.... Hope
the above will help.... Let me know of your success......

ps: likewise if you enable those unwanted entries, the freeware will take you
to their exact registry location....

I assume that you've looked in:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

and run services.msc?

For the 1st and last one, the application itself puts them back if it
notices they are gone - i.e. McAfee virus software, most like the real time
virus scanner/watch, and for real, any time you run Real Player, whether it
be the Browser Plugin or the actual application. I have the same issues
with Real, Roxio and several others, so I would assume your TH software does
the same each time run. I know the software writers do these things to help
the computer challenged people, in case they get deleted, the software makes
sure it can update itself, but they should give an option like MS does with
AutoUpdates, and give us experience computer users a choice to disable their
pesky update checking software - it is quite intrusive and arrogant if you
ask me to force it upon everyone, and I'm a software developer.
