why does windows misreport the number of unread messages

When I log into my computer, the welcome screen tells me I have three unread
messages. There are in fact no unread messages in my inbox, deleted items
box, spam folder, or any other folder. I do not have any other email account
and I do not use any messaging programs.
Any answers grateully received.

Well, looks like you've been waiting awhile for this one.

There is a registry key that keeps track of the number of unread e-mails you
have. This happened to me once when, if I remember correctly, my computer
locked up when I was downloading e-mail.
