Why does vista take so long to open some folders in Windows Explorer?

A green scrolling bar appears at the top of the page as it slowly loads -
What is that?

Some folders take up to a minute to open. Why?

Is your computer joined to a domain? What type of files are in the folders?

If your computer is joined to a domain and the DNS settings are wrong this
can happen as the computer is trying to find a domain controller to see if
you have access to the files.

If there are a lot of files in a folder that some add in for Explorer needs
to process, or your AV needs to scan, or Windows needs to generate
thumbnails or previews then you may see this behaviour.

Does it say explorer not responding?

If your DNS is wrong you would notice it when you logged on. It would take a
long time to go from the log on screen to the desktop as you would have to
wait for a timeout before it finally finds your controller. So unless that is
happening you probably don't have to worry about DNS. And personally don't
think it works that way with permissions but I could be wrong. I thought
permission are on the files them self and your authority is determined when
you log on.

Or it could just be hanging like my does all the time.

it tries to figure out what kind of files are in the folder and what type of display to use.
you can set most/all of your folders using Properties / Customize /All Items and it seems to speed things up.

Just opening some folders seems to take a much longer time than XP did.

good comeback bp. who cares what kind of files are in the folder! I have
three brand new hp915's, not more than a month old. I have issues (sometimes
up to 10 MINUTES!) whether browsing with explorer, or in an application, all
the time! My computer screams when not accessing files through our router.
Been 65 days and no one seems to know anything!? I do not understand and am
very up in arms about VISTA at the moment!

hows this for a note: my computer that is closer (less cable length) to the
machine which stores my files is faster at everything, but still rediculously
slow!!!!!!!
