Why does the word insertion point shortens?

I use Word 2003 i Office 2003 SBE. Sometimes the insertion point in a word
document shortens, and becomes even smaller than the typed characters, and
although there are no problems with editing, it is uncomfortable and I have
been unable to revert ir back to its normal size. I would appreciate an
explanation of why this happenes and how to correct it.

We don't know why it happens, but switching to 500% zoom and back again
usually fixes it.
