Hello

I have been using Word for YEARS now and have never before had this probelm.
I create a new document and type. I hate the formatting marks (the
back-to-front "p" symbol) but when I turn it off all my text ont he page
vanishes?!!

The text is probably formatted as "Hidden". Select it and be sure to
clear the attribute from Format | Font, Font tab. (If you've modified
a style be sure to check if the style definition includes "Hidden".)

Note that formatting marks are sometimes very useful. See:

What do all those funny marks, like the dots between the words in my
document, and the square bullets in the left margin, mean?
