Why does the backspace not work on highlighted text?

When I highlight text I cannot use backspace on it; nor can I write over the
highlighted text.

Back space just works character by character.

I imagine that this must be some default setting somewhere within editing a
document. How can I change this?

In Word, click on Tools | Options | Edit | check the "Typing
replaces selection" box | OK.
