Why does Send/Receive complete only the first five accounts?

I am setting up a new system with Windows XP and Office XP. (My previous
system was WIndows 2000 and Office 2000.) I have 25+ e-mail accounts that I
monitor regularly. (I have not yet activated either Windows XP or Office XP.
I don't want to activate them until everything works correctly in case I
have to reload everything._

I have set up the accounts correctly. The "Test Account Settings" dialog
completes with no error for all accounts. If I click on
Tools-Send/Receive-specific account for each account, they all send and
receive with no errors.

When I click on the Send/Receive button or the Tools-Send/Receive-Send and
Receive All or press F9, the dialog attempts to send and receive to each
account but is only successfull for the first five accounts.

Thanks for your help.

Out of curiosity, may I ask why? Are these all completely distinct email
addresses you have?

I can't solve the problem, but have you tried making multiple send/receive
groups and splitting the accounts between them?

Brian,

To answer your question as to why, I use different e-mail accounts for two
reasons; 1.) I set up an account for specific communication avenues. Then if
I start receiving a lot of spam on one, I can track it down and close the
e-mail account. 2.) I monitor many different domains, and have a e-mail
account for each of those domain.s.

As for your sugessestion. I will try setting up different groups. I'll let
you know how it works. In the meantime, I've gathered a litle more
information.

1.) THe download always works for the fires 5 accountd and ometimes it works
for the first next couple of accounts also.

2.)The send/receive progress screen shows an iteresting timing situation.
The errors for the account that don't work (btw, the error is:"the connection
to the server was interrupted") show up nearly immediatly after I click on
the send/receive button. Meanwhile, Outlook 2002 continues to download the
mail from the 5 or 6 accounts that do work.

It's as if Outlook 2002 tries to establish the connection to all the
accounts immediatly but downloads the e-mail sequentially. If I remember
correctly, Outlook 2000 connected to an account, dowloaded the e-mail from
that account and then went on to the next account. Any errors were reported
as they happened instead of all at once.

Thanks again for your help.

Brian,

I tried setting up groups, but get the same symptoms. (I left the group
"All Accounts" intact but changed it' s options to Not be included during
send and receive.)

Any other sugesstions,

Thanks,

Tom

Brian,

I mis-spoke about the effect of setting up groups.

When I send and receive a group of 5 accounts, no matter what accounts they
are, all five accounts are received correctly.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Tom

Brian,

I am still working this problem.

I have all my e-mail accounts set up in groups of five. I set the
send/receive schedule for each group such that the automatic send/receive for
each group start after the group before it.

This is a workaround, but it's not the correct way to have your mail sent
and recieved. Surely I am not the only person that has more than five e-mail
accounts they are activly reciveing mail for.

As I described in my previous problem description, when I send/recieve all
accounts, Outlook 2002 seems to immediatly run through the entire list,
marking accounts 6 -> end of list in an error condition and doesn't recieve
from them. When the list is broken up into groups of 5, this doesn't happen.

There has to be a way to get outlook to not behave in this bizzare manner.

Thanks again,

Tom

Brian,

OK - One last queston before I head out for the weekend.

Does Outlook 2002 try to open a connection to all e-mail accounts in it's
current list ("all" or a group) before it starts to download the e-mail? Or
does it open a connection to a account, download that account's e-mail, close
that connection and then begin with the next account by opening a new
connection?

Thanks again,

Tom

I thought I recell reading something that says it does. In fact, I know
I've seen log files showing multiple connections.
If I
remember correctly, Outlook 2000 connected to an account, dowloaded
the e-mail from that account and then went on to the next account.

I think OL 2002 behaves differently.

Hello Everyone,

OK - I gave up. I reinstalled Outlook 2000. It's too bad I couldn't
resolve this problem.

Thanks for your help.
