Why do I have to close some Excel documents twice?

Certain (but not all) Excel 2003 documents when opened by Excel 2007 in
compatibility mode show ":2" at the end of the document name. Those
documents have to be closed twice before they actually will close. How do we
correct this?

It is possible to have two views of the same workbook. That is what the :1
and :2 mean
Open a new workbook; use View | Window | New Window then View | Window |
Arrange/tiled to see this effect
To solve your problem; use View | Window | Arrange/tiled and close one of
the views before saving

You have two windows open on the same workbook. Close one of the windows,
then save the file. Next time you open it, there will be only one window
open.
