Why do Excel sheets embedded in Word close slow only sometimes?

I'm using Office XP and find that the excel spreadsheet which I embed into my
word documents will sometimes cause long delays and sometimes not. Double
clicking on the embedded excel object is only slow the first time...after
that, it opens quickly. But the intermittant problem comes in when closing
the object (by clicking elsewhere in the Word document). Sometimes, it will
close quickly. But then it gets into a mode where it takes 5-10 seconds to
respond. This also happens when trying to close the word document itself.
During the delay, neither Word nor Excell will respond. It works like this:
once it gets into a mode where the delay is occuring it just stays that way
for the whole day or more...but then for some reason it will go back to quick
response.

Hi =?Utf-8?B?VF9vX25feQ==?=,

The problem is most likely at the operating system level. Something interfering
with OLE communications. This could be some kind of watchdog or system
management (such as anti-virus software), or a basic problem in the Windows
configuration. It could also be an Addin in Word. Hard to say, especially since
it's not consistent. But if you have any Addins or "management" software
running, you might try disabling them and see if the problem goes away.

Thank you for your thoughts, Cindy. I am using Norton Internet Security 2005
and I certainly will try turning it off next time the problem is occuring
(right now it's not). When looking in Tools-->Templates and Addins...--> I
see that I have 2 addins, only one of which is being used. I've unchecked
that, and we'll see if that helps.

Is there a way I can assess whether it is something interfering by using the
Windows Task Manager? For example, within the Processes tab when I click
the CPU heading twice they order according to CPU usage. I wonder if they
are actually ordered according to CPU usage even though most show 00, and if
so, I wonder if I could find which process was interfering in this way--that
is, while the problem is occuring, would one of those .exe at the top be the
most likely problem?

On the other hand, since you say it's "at the operating system level" I'm
not sure it would be one of the .exe's.

Based upon other posts in this newsgroup, I've tried clearing the tmps (by
using Run... %temp% and then killing everything I could in that directory
using Run... Cmd-->cd <to the correct directory> -> del * Doing that and
restarting has seemed to help sometimes, but not always so I'm not convinced
that's it and am still searching to pinpoint the problem.

I'm afraid I have little to no experience with this aspect of the Task Manager.
You might inquire in a Windows group if anyone has any idea what processes
could be interfering with OLE client/server exchanges, though.

I have found that when I turn off my wireless connection, this problem goes
away. When I start the computer without having the wireless connection on,
the embedded excel sheets in my word documents both open and close very
quickly.

Therefore, there must be some network activity going on during those slow
times. The reason the problem appeared to be intermittant was that I didn't
realize that sometimes my wireless network feature was on vs. off.

JoAnn,

I'm not sure what you make of your comment. I was referring to the post I
made (copied below for convenience). I just thought it would be helpful for
someone to know that I'd solved the delay problem I described by turning off
the wireless switch on my computer when working with embedded excel
worksheets in Word.
