Why did user disappear?

This happened in Windows XP, but maybe the same for Win2000.

Despite the fact that the Documents and Settings folders for this particular
user still exists. Mysteriously, the user no longer shows up on the Welcome
Screen. She can still log on, after doing the ctrl-alt-delete thing twice.

Does anyone know how to fix this? I did a registry search, but couldn't come
up with anything. Since the Administrator account is also hidden, there
must be a registry place where this is controlled.

No, it's not the same. 2000 doesn't have a welcome screen
because it doesn't have Fast User Switching service. Have
you looked in the user's account settings to see if there
is a "Show user on welcome screen" setting? I think I
remember something like that, but it's been a while since
I've been on an XP machine.

The missing user doesn't even show up in the Users control panel, which
doesn't, by the way, have a Show on welcome screen setting. Thanks for
trying. There doesn't seem to be a Win XP newsgroup.

This group typically can cover XP too. I don't have XP though.
If the account does not appear in the Users and Groups try one more
thing. (_IF_ this exists in XPH) From the System Properties, User
Profiles list, see if the profile is listed. If not, then the
account has almost certainly been deleted on the system. That could
leave an orphaned profile tree under Documents and Settings.

And/or check under
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion
\ProfileList\

The missing user *does* show up on the User Profiles list and the registry
key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion
\ProfileList\

But besides not appearing on the Welcome Screen, she also doesn't appear on
the User Accounts control panel. When I try to add her, a message comes up
saying that she already has permission to use the computer.

That's good. But not having XP here is not helping me too much.
Afraid I can't think off-hand of _why_ you see (or don't see) the
user as expected there...

There is something you can do though perhaps. Creata a new User
Account for the user. Log in with it once. Then use the "User
Profiles list" to "copy to..." from the old listed profile to the
newly created profile location. Hint: check that the "Pemitted to
use" has the _new_ accountname listed.
