Why data disappears

I had data disappearing and hunted for reasons why. I found several
cases here but none that came to any fixed reason. Then I stumbled on
the fact that one station had "off line files" enabled.

This is a split db with the back end on the server, several people
doing data entry. They started noticing things they were sure they
entered weren't there. The losses might be data entered by one person
or another, not just one. I looked for extra copies of the data
getting mixed up and all sorts of other things. Then sitting at one
station a msg pops up about off-line files being in use. What an Oh
S... moment that was. This station was apparently syncing it's off-
line files with the server files and, I suppose depending on which was
newer, sometimes overwriting the server file, sometimes overwriting
the local file with what was on the server.

This was on a desktop that is never off-line, so next I'll try to
figure out why off-line files was enabled or, even if enabled, why off-
line files would actually be used on a system always on line. But
that's another issue.

But if you're losing data make sure nobody has off-line files enabled.
