Why Can't I Insert A Hyperlink In The Footer Of The Master Slide

I am attempting to insert a hyperlink (email address) in the footer of the
master slide. The hyperlink icon remains grayed out. Any suggestions?

I can see why it might do this. But ignore the footer; just create your own
text box and insert a hyperlink into that instead.
