Why can't I browse the LAN from a Windows 98 PC?

B

BtConnect

Here is the scene - can anyone advise me on this?

My server is called HP350 running Windows Server 2003

It has a NIC with static IP address 192.168.40.1 & mask 255.255.255.0

HP350 is the only File Server on the LAN

Some of my W98 PCs can't browse the network, but I can see them on other W98
workstations that can, when I Click on Neighbourhood Network

From my Windows XP workstation CompqWS1:

I can PING HP350 OK (Windows Server 2003) (192.168.40.1)

I can PING CompqWS1 (Windows XP) OK (which is 192.168.40.27)

I can't PING VctraWS2 Windows 98) (which is 192.168.40.26)

I can PING 192.168.40.26

Launch nslookup

Default Server: HP350.myoffice.local

Address: 192.168.40.1

Server: HP350.myoffice.local

Address: 192.168.40.1

Name: CompqWS1.myoffice.local

Address: 192.168.40.27

Server: HP350.myoffice.local

Address: 192.168.40.1

*** HP350.myoffice.local can't find VctraWS2: Non-existent domain

What could I do to fix these problems! If can't browse, it is difficult to
access networked printers and create maps to shares etc.

Is NetBIOS over TCP/IP installed on XP/2K3?
Are you running WINS?
Is the workgroup on (98) the same as the pre-2K domain name on W2K3?

Ping by IP is TCP/IP.
Ping by Computer name is NetBIOS.
Pre-2K Windows uses NetBIOS over TCP/IP, even if it only says TCP/IP.
