Why can't I add fields to an existing table?

I keep getting a "TOO MANY FIELDS DEFINED" message when trying to add a new
field to an existing table with 22 fields. This also happens when I try to
create a report using 2 of the tables in this data base. I have tried
everything I can think of, but nothing works.

22 fields is not too many. Try compact your database. I expect fields have
been defined and modified and deleted and added.

Thanks for your suggestion. It was exactly what I needed to do. I can't
believe it was such an easy solution.
