why cant explorer handle folders containing files 500mb+

G

Guest

every time I open a folder containing files which are >500mb explorer hangs,
and then asks me if i would like to close the non-responsive program.

also while installing a program for a friend I noticed he had the same
problem (we are both running home prem. OEM)

my system is fairly high spec ( c2d e6750, 2gb 800mhz ram, ati hd2900, asus
p5k) so I cannot see that it is to blame (opening folders is not a problem on
linux partition).

Or is this another side effect of micro$oft releasing vista before bug
checking it?

I just checked on my DVDs that are ripped to my hard drive, and those files
are each over 1 gig in size and explorer opens them up instantly. The are
VOB files though, and have no thumbnails associated with them.

Are the files you looking at mpgs, avi, mov or wmv files by any chance. The
delay can be caused by explorer looking through the video file and trying to
create a thumbnail. And if you dont have the required codecs installed, it
could take a long time.

Your problem is not file-size related.

I have issues with Vista showing folders with certain types of files.
I can open a folder of 300 JPG files (50-150kb each) no problem, but
opening a folder with 40 raw images from my camera will take up to 2-3
minutes. I am figuring the extra time is Vista scanning through each
file multiple times to gather the useless "extra" information like
tags from the files. If I switch to a list view with only the
filename showing the directory loads almost instantly. Switching to
details and adding a column like Date Modified (or more understandably
a column from the EXIF data) will freeze the explorer till it is happy
again. It has definately changed my picture processing habits to be a
lot less often and with a lot more frustration.

Which RAW files?
The camera manufacturer supplies the "codec" needed to extract the info and
it may just be slow.
I use Olympus RAW and it doesn't take that long on my laptop.
You may wish to check the camera manufacturers site for an update.

Olympus RAW here too, and the latest CODEC from Olympus. Very odd how
frustratingly inconsistant Vista seems to be.

How much RAM do you have? My laptop was quite slow when I first got it but
bumping the RAM up to 3G made it far more responsive for programs opening
lots of files.

I put vista on my media center machine this morning and it was noticeably
slower at displaying thumb nails in media center than this laptop. Its
quite old though P4 3G but only 1G RAM. It still wasn't taking as long as
yours though.

Found something quite interesting yesterday as I was downloading
images from my camera. Media player was dropping out a bit so I
closed it down (I thought one of the advantages of Vista was thread
priority so media did not drop out, but I could be mistaken about
that).

In any case - Media Player window went away immediately, but it took
about 40 seconds for a new dialog to go away. Apparently Media Player
was interrogating the removable drive for something. Son of a B - why
is media player interfering with pictures? Anyways - after the dialog
went away - my files downloaded super super quick.. 80 5mb pictures in
about 20 minutes (versus 60+ minutes for 30 pictures last download). I
will have to play around a bit to verify - but it looks like there is
a media player issue.

How to get media player to mind its own f**king business?

IIRC media player does search for media, this could slow you down but I
wouldn't have thought it would take that long unless it is scanning the
media content for some reason.

It must be scanning the media. I will try taking a bunch of low res
pictures and see if that gets scanned any faster (to try and isolate
my issue)_

I have opened a thread in the media player group hoping to see if
anybody knows a way around this issue.
