I am planning on buying a HP laptop.
Though I have decided on the basic configuration, I am confused on whether
to get tthe media centre laptop or the laptop with XP Pro.
I need the laptop for both home and office use - documents, email, games, music
and movies.
Could I get some help on this??

Are you ruling out Vista?

Media center gives you the entertainment addons like recording TV and
other multimedia goodies.

XP Pro if you need to join a domain, terminal services to the office (I
believe XP has a CAL builtin and Media Center does not)

My preference is XP Pro since I wasn't really that inspired by the media
center goodies.

But if the laptop has enough power (good graphics, 1GB or more RAM) I'd
seriously consider Vista - choose the version right for you

Some of my opinion and links to Microsoft (including version
comparisons) info here:
