Which MessageBoxIcon to use

In the Messagebox I can select various MessageBoxIcon.

I'm sometimes confused as to which to use.

For example,

If the app user tries to use the app to change something she has not the
privilege to change and I tell her that "Access Is Denied" is that an Error,
a Exclamation, or a Warning?

Are there some guidelines someplace I could read?

Just use common sense. In your example I would say use an exclamation icon.
She didn't make an error by trying to gain access, there isn't anything to
warn
her about since there is no consequence. So, it's simply and in your face
Access denied! type display.

OK I'll keep doing that and pay attention to what Windows does to get a
better feel.
