Which 80GB HD are you using with your P2B ?

My Maxtor DiamondMax 40GB now gives me a SMART warning, so I am looking for a
replacement. I want to upgrade to a 80GB. I bought today a Western Digital
WD800JB 80GB 8Meg buffer, only to find that it is not recognized correctly by my
BIOS. It sees only it as 32GB (my old 40GB is recognized as a 40GB though...).

Instead of trying all brands by myself, can you tell me which 80GB disk you are
running on your P2B, and the BIOS version. Please be specific by including the
mfg model number. Here is my system spec :

ASUS P2B rev 1.2,
BIOS 1014beta3,
Maxtor DiamondMax 54098H8

Thanks,

JTL

If a drive does that, check the config jumpers for a jumper called
"clip" or "32 GB". When that jumper is installed, it limits the detected
size of the drive. Removing the jumper should give you the whole disk.
In extreme cases, you have to download the OEM drive specification
PDF manual from the manufacturer web site, to get a complete description
of jumpers - some manufacturers are pretty lazy...

The jumpers are listed here, but my guess is that the "clip" option
has been omitted from the pictures. Is it possible that pin 1 is not
where you think it is ?

Perhaps the easiest test would be to remove all jumpers and put the
drive on a cable by itself. Then see if it reports 80GB and work from
there.

Figure 3 of this page shows the jumper combinations that "clip" a
Western Digital drive. It looks like according to Figure 3, two jumpers
need to be installed for this 32GB limit to exist:

I found out the this WD800JB would run alone on its own EIDE port only
without any jumpers (so not the alternate jumper setting shown on WDC
Web site). I can't make it run on my P2B by specifying master mode. So
there is no jumper config to limit its capacity.

Any make and model number to share, you know runs on a P2B ?

Unfortunately, I don't have anything recent. My last purchase was
just before the warranties went to one year from three years. I have
nothing but Maxtors, 40, 60, 80GB drives, stuff like D740X and 6L060.
Some were Quantums that were rebranded right after Maxtor bought
Quantum. I've had a couple of failures from the eight or so Maxtors
I've owned, so cannot recommend them from that point of view.

Don't give up on the WD800 just yet. This post says to try Dual Master
and Dual Slave, to get past 32GB:

From memory, I associate the name "Western Digital" with "Cable Select".
I have an old WD 24300 (4GB) drive sitting in my junk pile, and the
jumper on it is still in the CS position.

So, that means you should try jumpering just pins 5-6 and boot up, or
jumper pins 1-2 for cable select and try that. If there is a second
drive on the cable, it has to be set in a compatible way (Slave in the
first case, Cable Select in the second case).

Thanks paul for all this information. Unfortunately, I tried everything
you suggested. I gave-up on the WD800JB, and got an Maxtor DiamondMAx
Plus 8 40MB. Works fine, recognized correctly as a 40GB.

Thanks again,

JTL
