Jeff

just to be a stick in the mud,
I'm glad it's gone!!!
I never used quick launch in XP(or whatever that old os was called-lol)
and now I can't imagine all the clutter on the desktop, like I used to have.
Quick launch all the way-woohoo

"Clean" install of Vista RTM 6000 x32 on HP zd8000 laptop.

No IE icon on desktop. No option to put it there that I can find?

Where did it go? Antitrust issues, again?

P.S. Please don't tell me the following because I already know:

(1) Yes, I have an IE icon on my quicklaunch bar but that is *not* the
same as the one you get when you right-click the unique IE 7 icon on
desktop -- right-click yours if you have one -- see the option to start
without add ons, go to (Internet) Properties, etc?

(2) And, yes, you can drag the IE7 icon from your program menu and sort of
get the same results -- not quite. Try it.

(3) Do not tell me to right-click on the desktop, choose Personalise, and
then click Choose Desktop Icons. IE ain't one of my choices.

(4) Finally, If you upgraded when installing Vista, rather than doing a
clean install, and you already had a "genuine" IE 7 desktop icon, you
still do. I still do on a system where I upgraded to RTM from Build 5744.

Everybody with me? lol

So, how do I get my "genuine" IE 7 icon back on my laptop? This is *not*
a bug report -- it's a nit! lol
Guess I wouldn't be any help to you, since I keep ALL icons except for the
recycle bin, which I can't remove off my desktop. :( I rather like the clean
look I get.

I'm with you, Jeff. I love my clean desktop.

Nice find. I see no such option in Windows Live Mail which, for some
reason, I prefer as a newsreader.

But, I'm sure one of our millions of readers will prove me wrong.

Apparently, Jane, you bought some batteries! (ooops, that may sound
wrong -- lol)

Er, you can get rid of the recycle bin icon if you wish. Right-click on
empty spot on desktop, choose "personalize"
and at the upper left of the Personalization applet you'll see "Change
Desktop Icons" as one of the tasks. Choose that, unclick the recycle bin
icon, and poof, it is gone.

At which point, the only way to empty the trash is to run Disk Cleanup.

I suppose by setting privileges appropriately, this means I could keep my 18
year old, for example, from ever emptying the trash. Not sure why I would
want to do that ... but some corporate IT folks probably do.

Heck of a long winded response to what you probably meant as a joke.

It's past my bed time. :)

I see I can just delete mine from the desktop.
Might be because I have it disabled.

OMG, someone at MS was really that stupid? Yes, they were. But, how cute,
in Vista RTM the "are you sure msg" is customized to tell you to go to the
Personalization applet to get it back should you so decide.

And, now I am *really* embarrassed by the long-winded msg I wrote that you
quote below.

Egads!

Thank you, Jane C, fully-charged 6 amp, 12-cell LI-on battery included, all
cells firing at full speed :D

That's because this zip file is marked as originated from untrusted zone
(Internet). If you drag zip file from e-mail to your desktop, right-click
it, select properties and then click 'Unblock' button, you will be able to
extract its content without any problems/warnings.

By the way this mark is saved in the file's alternate NTFS stream so copying
such files to FAT16/32 volumes (e.g. your USB flash drive) will also clear
this blocking mark.

I have no doubt you are correct. I have no idea how you knew all that.
And, I do wonder if MS in its zeal to make Vista secure gave us too many
hoops to go through at times when a simple warning would have been
sufficient.

Anyway, Jane's toggle in Windows Mail also worked as would 10 others I
suspect.

As for me, I cut/pasted Marty's msg, merged the reg key I created, and am
now fixed (so to speak :-} ).

It was always removable.
It's a convenient way to quickly get to Internet Options (Properties from
the icon Robert means.

Yup, thanks, as you probably saw, Marty did post that key in text form and I
used it and got back my IE desktop icon.

And, you correctly understood why I wanted it. I clear files -- a lot --
and right-clicking the IE desktop icon was a convenient way to get to
Internet Properties. I also need to enable SSL 2.0 for one dumb financial
broker named Charles Schw*b but I tend to turn it off when I am not going to
need it for a while.

In short, I'm a fiddler with IE options and even do want to star it with no
add-ons from time to time. Yup, that's in the Programs menu with the RTM
build. If I can help it, I *NEVER* go to the Programs Menu. :-}

All in all, this forum fixed my nit in under an hour. Good work!

Thanks, Robert. I'm using XP for the time being, until January 30, when I
can get a second copy for this machine. For the time being, Vista is on my
Lappy only. I haven't tried to get rid of the recycle bin in ages, so it
might be possible to do even in XP? That would be nice.
