I used to find the CD Player in programs ---> Accessories --->
entertainment ---> Cd player, but I don't see it there.

How do I play *.cda files (not mp3 files). WMP and Real Audio Player won't
play those cda files. I tried to add the CD player as a windows component,
but I don't see it listed. What am I doing wrong?

Thanks.

It's called Windows Media Player.

Windows Media Player plays CD Audio Track (.cda) files.

To open Windows Media Player, click Start, point to Programs, point to
Accessories, point to Entertainment, and then click Windows Media Player.

For more information about using Windows Media Player, click Help in Windows
Media Player.

To open Volume Control, click Start, point to Programs, point to
Accessories, point to Entertainment, and then click Volume Control.

If you have a sound card, you can use Volume Control to control the volume
and speaker balance when you play audio files.

For information about using Volume Control, click the Help menu in Volume
Control.

Thanks for the response Westley, but when I try to play with WMP, I get an
error, that's why I was looking for the CD Player.
Firstly, it doesn't even list the files as being media files (even though
the type selected is "all media files"). I then select "any file" and try
to open the cda file. Here's the error message I get.

C00D11CD: Unknown error
Windows Media Player encountered an unknown error. This can occur when
another program or operating system component encounters a problem but does
not communicate the nature of the problem to Windows Media Player.

Error ID = 0xC00D11CD, Condition ID = 0x00000000
Are there perhaps codecs that I'm missing. I'm mystified by this.
Thanks.

Tom,
I'm running WMP 10 ---- Version identified as 10.00.00.3646. I asked it to
look for updates, but it reports that this is the latest version. It works
for everything else. I'm playing an mp3 now and it plays videos ... no
problem. I just can't play .cda files. It's most unusual.

Do you think a reinstall is warranted. I'm running it on WinXP Pro.
Diana

You probably have corrupted your Windows Media Player. You do not indicate
what version that you have installed. A smart move might be to uninstall
your current version and download and install the latest version Microsoft
Windows Media Player 10. Here is the Microsoft (free) download site:

Diana,
Check to make sure that .cda files are one of the file types that WMP is
enabled to recognize. Tools>Options>File Types Tab. Scroll down the list
and make sure you have Music CD Playback checked.

Hi Diana:

Kevin's reply is right on target, so be sure that you have a check beside
"Music CD Playback", because this is the option that allows you to play .cda
files. Click on the "File Types" Tab and "Music CD Playback" is the fifth
item down from the top. Again be sure you have a check beside it.You have
the latest version of Media Player.

Also here is a website that might provide the answer to your problem. Read
all the Q & A's and it sounds as if someone had your same problem and they
solved it with the answers, as posted:

Thank you Tom and Kevin.
Unfortunately there was already a check beside Music CD Playback, so I guess
that's not it.
Tom ... I'll check out that site you included and see if it helps.

Hi Diana:

Read the last two postings of the website that I gave you previously:
http://www.moviecodec.com/topics/3505p1.html
and it appears that if you rip (copy) the files with Windows Media Player
that it will convert them to either .wmv or .mp3 and then you should not
have a problem.

Are you trying to currently play files from a CD? If so, then the above
should be the fix. The ripped files will now be stored on your hard drive
Music Library.

Please let me know how you come out.

Where are the CDA files located that you are trying to play? On an audio CD
or on your hard drive? If on the hard drive, they will not play. CDA files
do not contain music. They contain information about music tracks. Insert
audio CD and use Media Player or another player to play the music.

Diana,

Do those *.cda file(s) play on other machines? Are they downloaded to your
hard drive or on a CD?
