where are files downloaded from IE automatically saved to?

Here's the deal:

I downloaded a Word document from my gmail account and edited it. When I
was done with my edits, I closed Word. The program asked me if I wanted to
save changes to the file, and I said "yes." Word then closed. Only then did
I realize that I had not saved the file to my personal files. This has
happened to me with previous versions of Word, and I've always been able to
locate the temporary file in which the document is automatically saved.
After running multiple searches in Vista, I can't find the recently modified
document. Any suggestions?

Wherever you told it to save them last. If you don't remember, then start a
new download of something, and take a look at the suggested destination.
That's where you last download went.

Vista search can be a challenge to newbies because it chooses what to index
and what not. Rather than climb the hill, there are a lot of freeware search
tools that will handle the more obscure searches. An example is Agent
Ransack which I prefer, but there are many others.

Good luck.

I think I am running into the same thing. After opening an excel spreadsheet
from an email in outlook, I make some changes and to save it, I must save as
a new file in a temporary folder. The location of this temporary folder from
the drop down of the save in box is:
Desktop\Todd\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet…\OLKFOE.

But, I can't find this location in windows explorer. I also can’t find it
when I try to drill down directly from the desktop. The Temporary Internet…
and OLKFOE folders either aren’t there or aren’t visible. How do I get vista
to let me see these? I also can't find the desktop folder. In xp, it was in
the documents and setting folder under the user, but vista doesn't show this.

Thanks,

Todd

Do yourself a big favor and patiently save the damned file to wherever
you want it and THEN open it from that location.

Your problem will be cured.

Thanks Nonny,
That's a good solution to the file location problem. I guess I am more
concerned about not being able to see folders and files that are there
somewhere, but not available to windows explorer for some reason. Any
insight to that would be greatly appreciated.

Attached files are held in a temporary area that normally only
requires access by your email client. You can't change that.

In XP I was able to find the folder and keep a shortcut to that
folder. I haven't tried with Vista.

\AppData is normally hidden
\Temporary Internet Files is normally a hidden protected Operating System
file

You'll have to remove the checkmark (if they're hidden) in windows Explorer:
Organize - Folder & Search Options - View

You can change that location anytime you save. Pick something you like.
Vista will suggest that the next time you save. As to AppData, it is a
hidden folder, and you won't see it unless you change the folder options
view to allow it. Anything stored there should be managed by the apps that
put it there. It's not a good place to download to.

Have a good day.

Thanks Dave,
I appreciate your help. But, now I am more confused. The c drive is now
listed twice in explorer. I can get to the temp folder in both, but the
OLKFOE folder isn't in either. I guess I will have to find a decent tutorial
and read up. I know they're trying to make it easier, but I like to know
where everything is rather than have hidden programs point to it.
Regards,
Todd
