When turning on HP printer it reboots system-no errors

I have win 2000 SP4. When I turn on my HP Officejet 7130xi
(USB) it reboots my system. No errors, and it does not
matter what program I am in. If I turn on the printer
before starting computer, no problem. HELP

With only the information you gave--
The printer may be causing a momentary drop in A/C input power to the
computer, due to a turn on transient. This can be caused by using the same
a/c branch circuit,or the same power strip, or even the same plug or
extension cord.

The USB port may not be able to provide enough power, due to other USB
devices.
The USB driver(s) may need updating. The support chipset drivers may need
updating.
The IRQ tables may have something sharing the IRQ used by the USB subsystem.

The USB ports and or the Printer drivers may not be installed correctly.
There may be a conflict between USB device drivers.

More information concerning your system might help to reduce the
possibilities.

When a USB event occurs that causes the system to reboot, I generally remove
the USB subsystem drivers and devices, and reinstall them. When you install
such things as USB printer, camera, and scanner drivers, follow the
instructions carefully.

Thanks Chuck. The printer is the only USB device
connected. Eight out of ten times it will reboot, then
sometimes I can power on-off the printer six times in a
roll without a problem. Doubt that it is a power issue. I
have reintstalled both printer and USB drivers, no change.
My old HP laser 3 that's connected to LPT1 does not cause
a reboot?? My cousin who also has a HP (different model
printer, different MB) printer connected to USB and
running Win 2000 SP4 is having the same problem.

"The only USB device connected" may imply that other USB device drivers are
installed, such as a Zip drive, even though the drive is not connected.

As I said, the usual process is to back all the USB drivers, including the
port and controller drivers out. (Uninstall them) Then reiboot, and
reinstall the USB drivers, making sure that those installed match the USB
hardware on the MBD. Finally reinstall the printer drivers step by step per
the instructions.

If this doesn't work, You are back to eliminating almost every other added
driver (F8) or other sequences to get as clean a boot as possible.
