When I try to import a particular video,....

....I get this message that the video is not "indexed" and cannot be imported. What does this mean? How do you "index" a video?? It's a .wmv file that plays fine but it just won't import. Thanks anyone for your help!

Rache

p.s. Still looking for a way to use realplayer files. Anybody figured it out yet?

Hi,

You need Windows Media Encoder to do the indexing...simply opening your
file and closing it will create the index...WME is a free set of programs
from Microsoft.

I have today imported a load of *.MOV files and exported the result as an
AVI file...its OK, but I would not want to put my name to the result. I can
do the same with REAL files and I fully expect the result to be the same.
The problem is the frame rate, if the REAL file has 25 or 30fps then you
will be in with a chance...the MOV files I imported today, seem to have a
frame rate of around 23...and 23 does not go easily into 25 or 30...result
was a picture with edges of objects that did not seem to know whether they
wanted to be at position (X,Y) or position (X + 1, Y + 1). I expect that it
is mostly to do with the way the data is actually streamed. There is
probably a way of doing better than I did, but not without throwing some
money at it I guess.

If you do come up with a better result, I would be interested to hear how
you did it.

Thanks! I downloaded WME but I can't seem to "convert" the file. Is that what I'm supposed to do? How do I just "open and close" a .wmv file? It only lets you open an "encoding session"??? Will converting the file give it an index? I keep getting an error message whenever I try to convert anything. This is such a headache.:

Hi Rachel,

See the Importing Source Files... Video... WMV page. There's a section about
indexing.

Hi there,

All you have to do is literally load the video into the program and then
literally close it down. The function is completely automatic, you need do
nothing else.

Hi there,

Please accept my apologies. I did not read your reply properly. Here is a
blow by blow account of what you must do.

1) Install the Windows Media Encoder 9 suite of programs.
2) Run the program called Windows Media File Editor
3) in the above program click File > Open and then select the wmv file that
is causing you problems
4) Wait a few seconds to be certain the program has finished loading
5) Click on File > Exit

Thats it. What will happen is that the program will realise that there is no
index and it will make one for you. In the very unlikely event that it does
not, then repeat the steps necessary to load your video and then ...

A) Click File > Save and Index

In the event that this does not solve your problem please do let us know

Thanks guys! I keep forgetting there's this great site by papajohn out there. You really do have info on any problem that may come up with MM2. I figured out how to do what you were saying...I KNOW I'm doing it correctly, but the damned program won't function properly. It actually won't open ANY files. I keep getting a message that the program has encountered a problem and needs to shut down. I get that for the Encoder and the Editing program, along with the other utilities. I have no idea what the problem is now (maybe something with my own computer???) but it's just not working. I've tried to reinstall/repair the program but it still won't work.

I just don't get why Microsoft puts all these programs out there that have all these problems/incompatabilities. They may be free, but they should still work.:(

Rachel,

Maybe time to use something like TMPGEnc to convert the WMV file into an AVI
file. There's a link to the download (if you don't have it) on my CD
Burning... General page.

Don't use the wizard. Drag and drop the WMV file into the video and audio
source file entries, then use File > Output to File > AVI > see my
Importing Source Files... Video... Recorded TV page for some notes about
codec versus file size and rendering time and quality.

Then use the AVI file in MM2.
