When I select a formating feature it hides my slide & I can't see

How can I move the formatting such as word art styles & shape styles so I can
see what it is doing to my text. I have to select one then get out of
formatting to see what it will look like. I either need to move the
formatting or the slide itself.

I am guessing you are working in PPT 2007 and experiencing the drop-down
menu's covering your work. In most cases if you click the small arrow in the
lower right of the menu it will open the dialog box as a new window which
can be moved so it does not block the editable slide area (can even be moved
to a secondary monitor if one is in use).
